May arrives with such excitement. The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and the first of the blooms are beginning to show in the garden. In this season, there is a precise, breathless moment that comes each May when the farm hangs in a delicate balance. One day, the branches of the trees are bare and appear as stark silhouettes against a chilly New England sky. The next day, a quiet explosion of white, blush, and soft pink ripples across the landscape.
Spring’s arrival isn’t a leisurely stroll; it’s a beautiful, chaotic sprint. And if you want to capture the fruit trees in their full glory, you have to be ready to run. That was my exact goal this year. I wanted to capture the beauty of the farm when the fruit trees are in full bloom, That time when the air is heavy with a sweet, delicate fragrance, and the gentle hum of early pollinators provide the perfect white noise. I knew the task would not be easy, you can never really predict when the trees will bloom. I know it will come in May but the exact week and day are all a secret held by Mother Nature herself.
The Magic of the First Petals
There is something deeply poetic about fruit blossoms. Pear trees drape themselves in clouds of pure, snowy white, while the apples and peaches follow closely behind with their romantic, shell-pink clusters. Walking into a blooming orchard feels less like stepping into a living, breathing cathedral of petals.
It is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking visual spectacles of the entire year. It’s the visual reassurance we all need that winter has finally lost its grip and warmer days are ahead.

The Great Spring Race
But as any grower or photographer knows well, this breathtaking beauty comes with a catch: it is maddeningly brief. The window of peak bloom for the fruit trees is a fleeting masterpiece. A fruit tree in full flower is a masterpiece that lasts only a matter of days—sometimes only hours if the weather decides to play games. The very characteristics that make these blooms so magical also make them incredibly fragile.
Catching them perfectly requires a mix of keen observation, patience, and a bit of luck. You find yourself constantly checking the weather, monitoring the buds, and watching the sky. This year, the goal was to capture the magic of the fruit tree blooms. The perfect partner was Karen Wituszynski Photography, she is the amazing photographer that partners with the Shepherd’s Gate to document the seasons on the farm. Karen graciously agreed even though the exact day and time could not be scheduled.
The urgency is real. When that moment arrives, you have to drop what you’re doing, grab your camera, and race out into the trees, desperate to freeze that perfect light against the soft petals before they flutter down to the earth. The beginning of each day, began by stepping out onto the deck that overlooks the fruit trees to see what the previous day had brought. Watching and waiting, it felt as if time was just hovering while the trees felt frozen in time.

The Art of the Ephemeral
There’s a beautiful lesson in the rush to capture the bloom. The fleeting nature of the orchard in spring is exactly what makes it so precious. If the trees stayed draped in pink and white all summer long, we might walk past them without a second glance. It’s the very fact that these petals will soon carpet the ground, giving way to the tiny green promises of summer fruit, that makes us stop in our tracks.
So, when the tightly wrapped buds finally opened, we couldn’t wait. It was time to walk among the rows, inhale the sweet fragrance, and snap those photos. Capture the magic while it’s here—because if we waited for tomorrow, should we even blink, we just might have missed it.

Karen was gracious to come quickly that Monday evening, so that we could swiftly capture the newly opened buds in full bloom, inhale the intoxicating fragrance that filled the air, and stand in awe of the breathtaking beauty that now surrounded us, a vibrant tapestry of colors that danced in the gentle breeze, beckoning us to pause and appreciate the moment. As we marveled at nature’s artistry, the soft twilight cast a warm glow, enriching the experience and deepening our sense of wonder as we shared whispered conversations about the miracle of life that unfolded before our eyes.

“Oh, fleeting season, fresh and fair, Your scents and songs float through the air. A fleeting glimpse of heaven’s grace, Before the summer takes your place.” – Unknown

The result was nothing short of spectacular. The photos in the blog complete the vision to document the fleeting beauty of the fruit trees in full bloom during the month of May. Thank you to Karen for sharing her talents and capturing the beauty of the season.
